THEM Logo Revealed!

I didn’t want to wait to reveal my latest creation for my iPhone/iPad game THEM, so here it is! INTRODUCING THE ICON! Yes, I had to put that in bold and in all capitals. Why? Well, the icon happens to be important, believe it or not. I don’t know if I’m just being a jerk when I say that I have held off purchasing some iPhone games because their icons, quite literally, sucked. Yep, I have not purchased apps based on my view of how their icons look! Why would I do such a thing? My iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad are expressions of who I am and therefore I will only allow the best of the best to have a spot on each of my devices. No, not really. In all seriousness, I feel that if the icon looks horrible, then the gameplay will reflect that. In some circumstance this is not the case, but in a large portion that is what I have found. (Please note: Some apps have amazing icons, but the games suck. Buyer beware!)

What I am trying to say here is that the icon of your game is VERY important! This is especially important on a mobile platform as this may be the first glimpse that a user gets of your game. Therefore, you must WOW your audience or at the very least “pique” their interest in your game. People will therefore be more inclined to purchase your app. For the iPhone you have several different things to take into account; There are the devices that will display your icon as well as the App Store itself. Taking this into account, you have to develop an icon that suits both of these sizes; one large, and one tiny. If you develop your icon thinking about how it will look on the App Store then you might find that that same icon doesn’t read properly when transfered to an iPhone or iPad. I ran into this problem developing the icon for THEM. I had originally placed a scene from the game as the background for my icon with Albert (The main character) on top of that. It looked really good as a large icon; very crisp allowing the user an idea of how the game looked. When I transfered the icon to my iPhone, I found out that the entire icon didn’t read well at all. Instead it looked like a blurry mess of nothing. I started to take things out of the icon, continually testing to make sure it read. I found out that having as little as possible in the icon allowed you to read it the best. The problem was that my icon was mainly black now and it looked out of place (and quite bad) on an iPhone. So I started from scratch.

Now, I had made a decision to not have any color within THEM. Black and white is the look I am going for, so I wanted the icon to represent that. What I ended up with as an icon is still black and white, but I am using both to complement eachother. My original icon was mainly black, but my final icon for THEM incorporates more white(grey) and therefore allows the icon to “pop” off the screen. What do you think of THEM’s icon? 1. Love the icon. Something I find that I don’t like for iPhone app icons is when they have too much detail in the icon. Since they’re fairly small icons, I think simpler is better. Great design that matches the look of the game and menu perfectly!

  2. Thanks Jordan! I found that as well. People try to cram too much into an icon. That almost never works.
